Under 17 League match

Barrhead B.C. 1 Gleniffer Thistle 1

The game was closely contested but it will be a game that Glens should have taken all three points. The Jags found the Barrhead keeper in fine form and but for his efforts glens should have been well in front. It took until the 32nd minute before Glens made their possession pay. Alex McFarlane Hit a free kick from half way and it looked to be sailing into the keepers arms until Andrew Stobo managed to get his head on it to put the visitors in front. Barrhead upped the pace a bit and shut down the Glens passing play and this resulted in a poor pass back to Glens keeper Scott Vallance  who was unlucky not to stop the shot from going into his goal.

The visitors then started creating more chances and had two good penalty claims turned down by the referee, but the finally got a penalty when Jack Murphy was having his jersey pulled, jack took the spot kick but this was saved by the keeper. The resulting corner kick saw Nathan Airds header hit the cross bar and was cleared away by some desperate defending.

Under 17 league match                                                                                                                                                                                       Dumbarton 2  Gleniffer Thistle 1

The visitors started well enough looking to continue on the back of two very good performances in the previous weeks. The jags found it difficult to break down the Dumbarton defence. Jack Murphy and Colin Brennan going close on a couple of occasions but found the Dumbarton keeper equal to the challenge. The home team went ahead against the run of play when a free kick was played into the Glens box after challenging for the high ball Alex McFarlane unluckily headed into his own net.

The second half saw the Jags have lots of possession but without creating too many opportunities. Glens went further behind when a deflected free kick wrong footed Glens keeper Scott Vallance. Glens managed to get a goal back with 12 minutes left to play when Donald Thomson managed to get past the central defenders to place the ball past the keeper.

Under 17 League
St. Cadocs 1 Gleniffer Thistle 4

Glens went a goal down in three minutes after a quick break down the visitors right hand side. This was a wake up call, and four minutes later some quick passes down the Jags left, resulted in Colin Brennan playing a ball into the path of Donald Thomson who volleyed the ball past the keeper from 18 yards. A momentum was now gathering and a throw out from keeper Scott Vallance to right back Andy Guthrie started the move for the Glenny third. On the 9th minute Guthrie played the ball to Connor Macdonald whose pass to Matthew Fender who played the ball back to Guthrie his pass was played over the top to an unmarked Thomson whose left foot shot wrong footed the keeper. Things settled down and both teams were playing entertaining football, but it took until 8 minutes before half time before the Jags went further ahead a tremendous run from Colin Brennan found Donald Thomson on the left hand side his cross was met by Jack Murphy who headed the ball back across goal wrong footing the keeper.

Jags were dominant in mid field with Nathan Aird a real driving force and with the defence being marshalled by an in form Andrew Stobo things were difficult for the home team. Mid way through the second half it was the hard working Thomson who held up the ball on the Glenny right and his cross was volleyed home by Matthew Fender, who managed to get across in front of the keeper.

A very good performance by Glens who play hosts to Johnstone Burgh at Abbotsinch next week.

Under 17 League                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Ardeer Thistle 4 Gleniffer Thistle 1

The visitors had the best of the early play and found the Ardeer keeper a very hard man to beat. Early efforts from Donald Thomson and Jack Murphy were blocked and cleared by the keeper. It was the home team who took the lead mid way through the half when a well struck shot gave keeper Scott Vallance no chance. The home team had the upper hand and soon added to their tally from a long range effort. The young jags were still dangerous and shots from Matthew Fender and Colin Brennan went just wide. Play flowed from end to end but while Glens came close Ardeer seemed to score from their trips up the park and scored another twice before half time.

Glens tightened things up in the second half but were struggling to get the ball past the opposing keeper. Mid way through the second half it was Jack Murphy who scored Glens only goal. Taking your chances is a must at any level and this is something that will be worked on at training this week.

Under 17 Scottish Cup

Gleniffer Thistle 2 Aston Villa B.C. 1

Played at a very windy Abbotsinch Park it took the Jags five minutes to create an opening for Donald Thomson to hit a terrific volley only to see the visitors keeper make a good save. With both teams playing well in difficult conditions it took until the 20th minute for Glens to make the breakthrough. Connor Macdonald got possession of the ball on the Glens left and his chip shot caught the keeper slightly off his line to make it one nil. However the lead was short lived when Glens keeper Scott Vallance parried an 20 yard shot but the rebound was tucked away at the second attempt. Just before half time a Macdonald corner kick was curled in at the front post to put the Jags ahead at half time.

The second half saw the home team play against the strong wind, but were passing the ball well in mid field. Nathan Aird and Colin Brennan were dominant  in mid field and were keeping possession well and breaking up the play. The home team suffered a set back when Alex McFarlane had to come off injured, this meant a reshuffle in defence with Colin Brennan joining captain Andrew Stobo in the center of defence. Glens looked dangerous in attack with both Matthew Fender and Donald Thomson coming close to putting Gleniffer further ahead but the keeper was very alert to their efforts. In the closing fifteen minutes Villa created a couple of long range efforts but found keeper vallance a hard man to beat.

Under 17 Scottish Cup round 3                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Gleniffer Thistle 2 Kelty Hearts 0

Glens played host to the team from Fife who are going well in their own league, and this had the makings of a great cup tie.

Both teams served up some good passing moves in the early stages of the game. But the first real chance of the game fell to Donald Thomson, in the twentieth minute, but his shot was well saved by the Kelty keeper. Glens started to get the upper hand when Nathan Aird and Connor Macdonald started to gain control of the mid field. Glens opened up the scoring when Andy Guthrie hit a long diagonal pass to Thomson whose control and shot went sailing past the keeper. Glens almost went further in front when a Connor Macdonald corner kick was partially cleared into the path of Andrew Stobo, Andrew hit a powerful shot from the 6 yard line was deflected onto the cross bar and cleared to safety by the visitors. Kelty almost equalised when a ball was played over the Glens defence where a Kelty player volleyed the ball off the bar.

The second half saw the Jags control most of the play and it was Thomson who got his second to put the game beyond the visitors. He dribbled the ball along the visitors bye line before hitting his shot in at the back post. Thomson almost got his third but his effort came off the far post and out of play. A good performance from Glens who are now away to Spartans in the next round.

Under 17 Scottish Cup  4th Round

Spartans  2  Gleniffer Thistle 1

Both teams at Spartans Academy were worth a place in the last 16 of the under 17s Scottish Cup but Spartans’ Sean Stewart’s volleyed winner proved enough to separate these talented sides. Had Tam McGaughey’s half volley after 85-minutes gone either side of Mark Horsburgh in the Spartans’ goal the result might have been different. Thistle showed no sign off weariness as both teams started the game with intent and intelligent play. In a closely fought opening Spartans’ almost landed the first blow with a sweeping counter attack arching from right back Alistair Chrisp, through Spartans right midfield and ending with a shot from just inside the left hand side of the box that Scott Vallance, in goal, somehow clawed away as Spartans’ fans raised their arms in anticipation. They were again frustrated 10-minutes later as the contest opened up. Vallance showed valour to dive at the feet of Bonar to block a follow up shot from the advancing Spartans only to see the ball squirm out to Stewart at the back post whose shot rolled across the line but wide.

Missed chances can upset a team’s concentration and so it proved here. On Thistle’s resulting counter, Connor Macdonald looked up halfway inside Spartans’ half and hit a perfectly judged diagonal pitch into the channel for Tam McGaughey to volley Gleniffer in front. The lead lasted less than 5-minutes. A high floated corner from Scott Bonar found Stewart in space at the far post and he made no mistake with his header to level the tie.

The remainder of the half was exhilarating stuff. In a carbon copy of Gleniffer’s goal McGaughey volleyed again at Horsburgh but the keeper’s wonder save low to his left preserved parity in the tie.It was a testament to the quality of the play that both teams defended well yet created great chances. Spartans, Bruce Gorrie, was outstanding in defence while at the other end Jags captain, Andy Stobo put in a leader’s performance marshalling his backline well. Chances were missed or brilliantly saved at both ends. Spartans’ lightening quick Bradley Raiker anchored Spartans’ midfield brilliantly, time and again using his close control and blistering pace to drive at Thistle’s defence. One such burst saw Raiker carry the ball 30-yards before splitting Gleniffer’s defence with a reverse pass that Bonar casually flicked in the air before volleying goal ward from the edge of the area. Vallance again saved well.

In a second half that lacked the quality if not the intrigue of the first, the loss of central defender Alex McFarlane at half time through injury, this meant some re shuffling in the visitors ranks. Matthew Fender almost found the bottom corner of Spartans’ net with a 20-yarder minutes before Spartans,  Matthew Underhill’s, flick found Stewart in the box and in enough to slam the eventual winner across Vallance and into the far side of the net.

Spartans were thwarted by Vallance and bad luck as they looked to seal the tie in a frantic episode which, Gleniffer somehow survived.

Under 17 League

Gleniffer Thistle 8 Johnstone 1

Glens took a while to make the breakthrough in this one sided match goals from Tam McGaughey 3, Matthew Fender 2, Colin Brennan 2 and Nathan Aird 1.

Under 17s League

Gourock YAC 0 Gleniffer Thistle 3

Glens went to Darroch Park expecting a tough game and were not disappointed. The first half saw midfield being over run with passes but with no end product as both defences on top. With injury to central defender  Alex McFarlane, saw Colin Brennan step in and assist captain Andrew Stobo, who had an outstanding game, marshall the Glenny back four. The first half saw Glens keeper Scott Vallance with virtually nothing to do.

The second half saw first blood go to Glens after 21 minutes, when Andy Guthrie took a short corner on the Gleniffer left, his quick one two with Donald Thomson, with the ball played back into his path Guthrie chipped the ball towards the back post and into the goal. Shortly after this the home team were reduced to ten players after one of the players received a second yellow card. This seemed to spur the home team on and at times looked dangerous but with the Glens defence on top keeper Vallance had to deal with some long range efforts. At the half hour mark the visitors went further ahead when Nathan Aird drove the ball into the box this was deflected into the Gourck net by a defender. With 10 minutes to go the home team again lost a player for another double booking, this allowed the Jags to pass at will and it was Aird again who played the ball into the box, after a scramble to get it cleared it was left to Donald Thomson to back heel the ball into the net. Glens last chance was left to Andrew Guthrie, he pounced on a Matthew Fender shot which game off the post, Guthrie slid in but his effort went wide.

A good solid performance from Glens with Andrew Stobo being man of the match.
