Published: 21/10/2008

MANCHESTER United are on the trail of St Johnstone player Stephen Reynolds.

The 16-year-old forward has been brought to the attention of the Old Trafford coaching staff after a series of strong performances for the Perth side’s youth and reserve teams and the European champions have been represented at matches recently.

Reynolds joined St Johnstone in the summer after manager Derek McInnes signed him on a three-year deal from Gleniffer Thistle.

ElderslieB.C. V Gleniffer Thistle B.C. - match postponed (No parks available)

Saturday 30th August
Erskine B.C. 1 Gleniffer Thistle B.C. 4
Scorers- Paul Williamson, Andy Hunt (pen), Darren Jones, Gary Blair

Gleniffer started their season in earnest with a great victory against Erskine B.C. with their 3 new players on show.
Thistle were on top from the 1st minute with some excellent play from Gary Duthie and Darren Jones down both wings but it took to the 10th minute to open the scoring when a slide rule pass from Scott Clark was latched on to by Gary Blair who fired home from 12 yards. Next up to put the ball into the net after 25 minutes was Darren Jones who chased a Gary Blair pass down the left wing and cut in to blast home from 10 yards.
Despite some more delightfull play from Paul Williamson and Jonathan Allan, Thistle could not convert their pressure into more goals.

H/T 0-2

Gleniffer had keeper kyle Reid to thank 5 minutes after the break when he dived to his right and pushed the strikers shot round the post.
Then on 15 minutes great play from new boys Tony Hopkins and Scott Mitchell resulted in Tony sending Paul Williamson free who wasted no time in scoring Thistle's 3rd of the game.
With the action flowing from end to end it was Gleniffer who got the clincher when Darren Jones was up ended in the box after 29 minutes and up stepped regular penalty taker Andy Hunt to blast home from the spot.
After 35 minutes Michael Donnell was terribly unlucky to see his 25 yard shot bonce back off the crossbar.
On 38 minutes Erskine were awarded a free kick on the 18 yard line which the striker fired home to give keeper Reid no chance.
The usual suspects at the back consisting of skipper scott Clark, Blair Wright, Gordon Ion and Scott Bruce were at their usual best to contain all that Erskine could throw at them.
The only dissappointing thing about this game was the injury to Gary Blair in the final minute which will keep him out for the next 4-6 weeks after a reckless tackle.
Final score Erskine B.C. 1 Gleniffer Thistle 4

Sunday 7th September

Scottish cup 1st round
Rutherglen B.C. 0 Gleniffer Thistle B.C. 1

Thistle travelled to Rutherglen to take on the unknown quantity of their opponents.
Right from the 1st whistle it was apparent that we were in for a tough game with the Rutherglen players not holding back in any challenge.
Despite creating many chances with as many as 7 different players having a shot on goal it was not to be Thistle's half.
 H/T 0-0
After the break Gleniffer stepped up a gear but still could not force a way past the Rutherglen keeper with Darren Jones forcing the keeper into a wonder save and the unlucky Michael Donnell hitting the bar for the second week in a row.
It took to the 80th minute when Paul Williamson fired home from 12 yards through a sea of players to give Thistle the goal they deserved.
This was a typical cup tie with both teams going at it but it was gleniffer who head into the 2nd round.
F/T 0-1
Refs man of the match Jonathan Allan

Saturday 13th September

St. Mirren B.C. 1 Gleniffer Thistle B.C. 3
On a miserable wet day Gleniffer took on old rivals St. Mirren at St. James park and it was St. Mirren who controlled the run of play in the first 10 mins. Gleniffer took the lead on 12 minutes against the run of play when a long throw by Darren Jones was met superbly at the near post by fullback Gordon Ion to nod home from 6 yards.
Thistle doubled their lead on 14 minutes when some good football from Paul Williamson and Tony Hopkins resulted in Gordon Ion firing in a cross ball which Darren Jones done extremely well to beat the central defender and keeper to the ball to again nod home.Thistle started to settle and passed the ball around with nothing getting past the defence of  Blair Wright, Andy Hunt, Gordon Ion an skipper Scott Clark.Keeper Kyle Reid was called into action on 33 minutes when he palmed the ball round the post from the St. Mirren strikers terrific shot from 20 yards.
H/T 0-2
Despite the terrible underfoot conditions both teams passed the ball from end to end with Gleniffer winger Gary Duthie and Jonathan Allan both coming close with long range shots which the keeper did well to save. Then on 25 minutes st. Mirren got the goal they deserved when some hesitation in the the Thistle defence allowed the St. Mirren striker to nip in front of keeper Reid to slot home from 10 yards.
After this wake up call and some changes Gleniffer took control of the last 15 minutes with Scott Mitchell and Michael donnell combining well to set up Darren Jones who fired wide from 12 yards.
On 35 minutes Gleniffer killed the game when Michael Donnell latched onto a Gary Duthie through ball to slot home from 12 yards.
F/T 1-3
Both teams should take credit from this game as they both put on a show which took place in terrible conditions.
Ref's Man of the Match was Jonathan Allan with Scott Bruce, Scott Clark and Gordon Ion worthy of a special mention.
Next up is an away Scottish cup 2nd round tie against Castlemilk B.C. on Sunday 21st September

Scottish cup 2nd round
Castlemilk B.C. 1 Gleniffer Thistle B.C. 10

Gleniffer travelled to Shettleston to take on the unknown Castlemilk B.C. and found themselves 1 nil down after 2 minutes when they scored from a header at the near post. This was the jolt they required to kick start the game as they looked very slow and cumbersome from the start.
It took until the 20th minute when Michael Donnell slipped the ball past the keeper. Then on 20 minutes Paul Williamson latched onto a Gary Duthie through ball to double the lead.Despite more scoring opportunity's from Michael Donnell (4) Gary Duthie, Darren Jones and Jonathan Allan who all should have scored, it remained 2-1 at the interval.
H/T 1-2

Thistle started the 2nd half more up beat and totally over ran the Castlemilk team with further goals from Darren Jones 4no, Scott Bruce, Andy Hunt penalty and a further brace from Paul Williamson. More very good chances were created but Gordon Ion, Blair Wright, Scott McPherson and Tony Hopkins could only watch the very good Castlemilk keeper pull off save after save. This was a better performance from Gleniffer in the second half which was the result of playing a passing game on the very tight park. Defenders Scott Clark and Scott Mitchell kept the Castlemilk forwards at bay all through the game.

F/T 1-10
Ref's man of the match went to Jonathan Allan with Darren Jones a close second
Next up is away to St. Andrews (Greenock) in the league on Saturday 27th September

St. Andrews 0 Gleniffer Thistle 2

Gleniffer travelled down to Greenock to take on the new look St. Andrews on the dreaded red blaze. It was Thistle who started the brightest with Gary Duthie and Paul Williamson both going close. With the rain swirling and the wind blowing the full length of the park it was a tremendous move which involved Jonathan Allan and Scott Bruce on 25 minutes with Jonathan Allan sending Tony Hopkins free who lobbed the advancing St. Andrews keeper to put Gleniffer 1-0 up. Thistle continued to press with the wind advantage with Gary Duthie beating the offside trap but could only watch his shot from 18 yards go into the keepers arms. Then on 44 minutes Paul Williamson again beat the offside trap but as Gary Duthie before him shot into the keepers arms.
H/T 0-1
With the wind now in their faces Gleniffer had to wether the storm from St. Andrews long ball tactics, but skipper Scott Cark along with the usual suspects in defence Blair Wright,Andy Hunt and Gordon Ion held firm and not allow the home team any advantage. With the game on a knife edge it was Gleniffer who stole a march on their opponents with Jonathan Allan closing down the ball and surging forward to beat the defence to the ball before calmly slotting home from 12 yards to kill the game on 75 minutes. Then on 80 minutes Michael Donnell should have scored when he beat the offside trap but fired wide of the keeper.Next up was Scott Mitchell who watched his shot go close after good work by Darren Jones. With the game under control Gleniffer conted down  the final minutes by playing some nice football and  keeping the ball from their opponenets.
F/T 0-2
Refs man of the match was Gary Duthie with keeper Kyle Reid worthy of a mention who controlled his box to keep up his impressive start to the season.
Next up is Alba Thistle in the league at Linwood sports centre on Saturday 4th October with a 2-30 kick off.

Gleniffer Thistle 3 Alba Thistle 2

Gleniffer under 17s started this game at the Ibrox centre astro grass after Linwood was washed out with the inclement weather and for the first 5 minutes controlled the game by containing Alba in their own half. But it was all Alba for the next 25 minutes when they put Thistle under the cosh and scored with a Graham Boyd shot from 20 yards to give keeper Kyle Reid no chance after the Thistle defence stood off the forward and gave him time to fire home after 25 minutes. With the rain easing Thistle slowly came back into the game by playing their normal passing game, when on 36 minutes some fantastic work from Scott Bruce and Michael Donnell resulted in a corner for Gleniffer. From the resulting corner which Jonathan Allan fired in at waist height, Scott Mitchell was first to react to volley home from 8 yards. Gleniffer kept up the momentum until the half time whistle but couldn't find a way past the very good Alba keeper.

H/T 1-1

With the wind now at their backs Gleniffer picked up where they left off by containing Alba in their own half and were unlucky when Paul Williamson and Scott Bruce both shot wide of the Alba goal. However on 14 minutes the best move of the match involving Andy Hunt, Darren Jones, Gordon Ion, and Blair Wright resulted in Gary Duthie rattling the ball into the net from 12 yards. This pepped up Gleniffer even more when on 16 minutes great play from Scott Clark and Tony Hopkins resulted in the ball falling for Darren Jones who wasted no time in firing home from 25 yards. Despite being 2 goals down Alba continued to press forward and were rewarded with a free kick on the 18 yard line on 38 minutes and scored their second of the game when the striker was first to react to the loose ball after keeper Reid made a tremendous save to fire into the empty net. Gleniffer held on for the final whistle to take all three points to go top of the league.

F/T 3-2

Ref's man of the match went to Scott Mitchell but special mention should go to all of the boys on show today that provided entertainment for the large watching crowd. Next up is an away trip doon the water to Dunoon on Saturday 12th October.

Saturday 11th October
Dunoon 1 Gleniffer Thistle 11
Gleniffer went doon the water to take on Dunoon on a well prepared surface in the Dunoon stadium. it was first blood to thistle when Michael Donnell latched on to a Gary Duthie pass to side foot home after 3 minutes. Then on 8 minutes Darren Jones doubled the lead when he ran onto a Tony Hopkins through ball to once again side foot past the keeper. With the clock showing 16 minutes Gleniffer scored their third when Jonathan Allan headered home from 6 yards after Scott Bruce's shot hit the crossbar. On 23 minutes Scott Bruce played a neat one two with Tony Hopkins and when the ball came back to him he barged past to fire home from a tight angle to give the keeper no chance.Incredibly after 25 minutes Michael Donnell scored his scond and Thistle's fifth when he side stepped the keeper to place home from 12 yards after some fine play from Andy Hunt and Blair Wright. With the game sown up Gleniffer continued to play their passing game and were further rewarded when Scott Bruce fired home on 33 and 41 minutes with two goals which were near identical with Andy Hunt and Scott McPherson the providers. Then on 44 minutes Michael Donnell collected his hattrick when he again latched on to a Gordon Ion slide rule pass to go around the keeper.
H/T 0-8
Dunoon to their credit continued to push forward and were worthy of their goal on 4 minutes with the nippy striker side stepping the defenders to rifle home past keeper Kyle Reid. Dunoon's goal  woke up Gleniffer with skipper Scott Clark taking controll of his defence to ensure that it would not leak any more goals. On 8 minutes a great move involving Paul Williamson, Gary Duthie and Scott McPherson was superbly finished by Tony Hopkins when he fired home from 18 yards. Then on 25 minutes Paul Williamson fired home a penalty kick after he was up ended in the Dunoon box. With the game coming to a close Scott Bruce got his fourth and Gleniffer's eleventh on 40 minutes when he converted gordon Ion through ball.
F/T 1-11
Ref's man of the match was Jonathan Allan with a special mention to Scott Bruce who's four goals were a joy to watch from his left midfield position.
Next up is a home league game against Elderslie Amaturs on Saturday 25th October as we have several players away on holiday during the school week.

Gleniffer Thistle 10 Elderslie Amateurs 0

Thistle started this league game played at the Ibrox centre, with the conditions remarkably good despite the horrendous weather with the Paisley area.It was first blood to Gleniffer when Michael Donnell latched onto a Paul Williamson's pass to fire home on 15 minutes.Thistle lost full back Gordon Ion after 16 minutes when he suffered a dead leg and had to go off. It was Michael who grabbed the second when he again ran onto a Tony Hopkins pass to double the lead on 27 minutes. With Gleniffer dictating the play they got the third on 38 minutes when Gary Duthie tapped in a Michael Donnell cross come shot. After 43 minutes Jonathan Allan grabbed number four by blasting home from 18 yards after Scott Mitchell went close with a great shot which rebounded into the path of Allan.

H/T 4-0

Gleniffer started the second half with the wind at their backs and were quickly into their stride when Paul Williamson latched onto a Scott Clark through ball to slip past the Elderslie keeper after 49 minutes. On 54 minutes Michael Donnell grabbed his hat trick when he ran onto a Blair Wright pass from the right to hammer home from 15 yards.Again on 60 minutes Scott Bruce blasted home from 25 yards after terrific play from Darren Jones and Tony Hopkins. Then on 71 minutes Paul Williamson grabbed his second of the game when he was put through by Jordan Annan and wasted no time firing into the empty net.Michael Donnell grabbed his fourth of the game when he got on the end of an Andy Hunt cross and side footed home from 5 yards on 83 minutes. With the clock ticking down the best was saved to last with fullback Andy Hunt hitting a 25 yarder from the left into the top corner to score number ten.Ref's Man of the Match was the impressive Gary Duthie.

Gleniffer Thistle under 17s  2 Glenbrae Colts 0

Thistle started this game determined to put the loss of the previous week behind them and were soon on top as early as the 3rd minute when Gary Duthie went close after going on a mazy run and released a right foot shot which the Glenbrae keeper dealt with. On 18 minutes striker Michael Donnell had the ball in the net from a Gordon Ion cross but was judged to be offside. Then on 25 minutes Paul Williamson went close after some neat play from Tony Hopkins but again the Glenbrae keeper was on top of his game.On 38 minutes skipper Scott Clark made a last gasp tackle on the Glenbrae forward to deny Glenbrae to open the scoring and then again on 42 minutes with the help of keeper Kyle Reid. With no more scoring opportunities by both teams the half time whistle sounded which would allow the management to get their point across.

H/T 0-0

Gleniffer started the second half upbeat and as the first half dictated the opening minutes with Scott Bruce going close followed by a Paul Williamson solo effort. On 13 minutes Thistle broke the deadlock when some terrific play by Scott Mitchell and Andy Hunt resulted in Michael Donnell nipping in to side foot home to give Gleniffer a deserved lead. While Gleniffer were playing their passing game Glenbrae were by no means out of the game and started to pile on some pressure of their own and Gleniffer had keeper Kyle Reid to thank on two occasions when he went down at his right hand post to deny Glenbrae an equaliser.Gleniffer should have doubled their lead on 35 minutes when Blair Wright beat the offside trap but could only watch as the Glenbrae keeper once again produced a moment of magic to deny Blair his third goal of the season. With the clock ticking down it was great to see Gary Blair back in a Gleniffer shirt after a two month absence and he slotted into midfield to stiffen up the team and teaming up with Darren Jones to pass their way out of trouble.Once again Thistle had keeper Kyle Reid to thank when he denied a certain goal scoring opportunity when ex Thistle hit man Anton Elliot raced through on goal but big Kyle came out at pace and managed to divert the ball past the post to keep his goal intact. On 42 minutes a terrific move involving Scott McPherson and Jordan Annan resulted in the new signing Jordan slotting home from 18 yards to give the keeper no chance and put the game beyond the reach of Glenbrae.

Ref's man of the match was keeper Kyle Reid but it was terrific to have all 15 boys’ back which can only strengthen the team for the up and coming league games.Next up is St. Mirren B.C.

Saturday 15 November 2008 League match
Gleniffer Thistle B.C. 3  St. Mirren B.C. 0

With the recent heavy rain in the Paisley area which initialy put off this fixture Gleniffer managed to secure the Astro grass at Ferguslie to keep their run of games going.
Thistle started the better of the teams and were quickly on the attack with Scott Bruce blasting the ball off of the crossbar on 4 minutes after good link up play from Gary Duthie and Michael Donnell.
With the wind at their back Gleniffer kept to their passing game and of a result of that won a corner which was superbly flighted in by Darren Jones and Gordon Ion was on hand to volley home from 5 yards to put Gleniffer one nil up.
This seemed to spur St. Mirren on and they came back into it and pushed Thistle back into their own half but it was a classic counter attack which brought the second goal on 19 minutes with Jordan Annan, Gary Blair and Gary Duthie all playing their part to allow Scott Bruce to drive home from 12 yards on the left hand side.
Once again St. Mirren continued to press forward but skipper Scott Clark along with the other usual back line of Blair Wright, Andy Hunt and Gordon Ion held firm to ensure that their would be no easy chances for the away side to threaten the goal of keeper Kyle Reid who up to that time had a quite afternoon.
On 36 minutes Michael Donnell had a terrific chance but could only watch the very good St. Mirren goal keeper bring out a terrific save.
H/T 2-0
As in the first half Thistle started the better team and were rewarded on 5 minutes when some tidy play involving Jordan Annan, Scott Bruce who sent Andy Hunt flying down the left hand side and when his low cross was fired in low it was Gary Duthie who was on hand to side foot home from 8 yards to give Thistle a three goal advantage.
With the wind now picking up Gleniffer stiffened up the midfeild by putting in Scott Mitchell who strolled through the game giving the midfielders a torrid time by blocking every attack that came his way.
Gleniffer continued to press forward and were unlucky not to score any more goals with Tony Hopkins bringing out a terrific save from the keeper, Blair Wright from a header, Paul Williamson from a terrific steal from the St. Mirren defender shooting into the keepers hands and a Scott McPherson mazy run and shot which shaved the post but it was not to be.
F/T 3-0
It was a delight to watch this performance from all 15 boys
Ref's man of the match went to Andy Hunt who powered up and down the left hand side all day but with a special mention for Scott Bruce and Paul Williamson who continued to give the St. Mirren team no time to settle all day.
Next up is an away league game against Oban on Saturday 22nd November

Oban Saints 0 Gleniffer Thistle 17s 3

Gleniffer made the long journey north to take on Oban Saints with only 11 players with Scott Bruce, Scott McPherson working, Scott Mitchell, Paul Williamson injured and knew that they were in a game with Oban making all the play in the first 10 minutes but could not get past the Gleniffer defence who held firm. Then on 14 minutes a tremendous move from Gary Blair and Tony Hopkins resulted in the ball being played to new signing Jordan Annan who wasted no time in blasting home from 25 yards to give the Saints keeper no chance to put Thistle one up. Gleniffer continued to press forward with Michael Donnell and Gary Blair both going close. Keeper Kyle Reid was on hand twice in the closing 10 minutes of the first half to deny the very good saints forward who was a handful all day.

H/T 0-1

Thistle continued where they left off in the first half with Darren Jones going close after being put through by Gary Duthie on 4 minutes. Then on 15 minutes Gleniffer got their second when terrific play from defence by Blair Wright and Andy Hunt resulted in a wonder ball through to Michael Donnell who held up the ball then turned the big centre half and unleashed a magnificent 25 yarder over the advancing keeper. Despite being two goals down Oban continued to press forward but got no change out of skipper Scott Clark and Gordon Ion who were brilliant all day and never put a foot wrong. Keeper Reid was called into action on 35 minutes when he got down to his left to save the Oban strikers 20 yard shot. With the minutes ticking down Gleniffer produced the move of the match involving Darren Jones, Michael Donnell and a final ball from Gary Duthie to Jordan Annan who dummied the Oban defence to fire home from 12 yards to kill the game and take the three points back to Paisley.

F/T 0-3

Ref's man of the match was Gary Blair but once again this was a master performance from all 11 boys in action today.Next up is a home tie in the western region cup against St. Andrews on Saturday 29th November.

Saturday 28th November

Western Regional Cup

Gleniffer Thistle 7 St Andrews 0

Thistle 17s started this regional cup game still up beat from last week's victory at Oban by taking the game to their opponents with striker Michael Donnell going close after 3 minutes hitting straight at the keeper. With the minutes ticking by it was all one way traffic but on 10 minutes a Darren Jones corner was met by Blair Wright at the back post which was headed across the goal and headed in to the net by Gordon Ion.Gleniffer stepped up again and were rewarded on the 12th minute when the long throw by Gary Blair caused confusion in the St Andrews defence to such an extent one of the defenders headed into his own net to put Gleniffer two goals for the good. Then on 24 minutes a mazy run from Gary Duthie finished with Gary Blair blasting home from 12 yards. On 32 minutes Thistle got number 4 with the best move of the match which started with Scott McPherson winning the ball in midfield, finding Darren Jones with a killer pass down the left wing and when Darren fired in the cross Michael Donnell was on hand to volley home from 10 yards.Gleniffer grabbed number 5 on 38 minutes when a Gary Blair through ball was met by Michael Donnell who rounded the keeper to slot home.

H/T 5-0

Thistle started the second half by grabbing number 6 on 12 seconds when Michael Donnell robbed the defender to square the ball to Darren Jones who blasted home from 6 yards to put Gleniffer 6 up. Gleniffer started to play some terrific football with Scott Bruce rattling the bar and Paul Williamson's run and shot being well saved by the keeper plus the tremendous display from the home defence of skipper Scott Clark, Blair Wright, Andy Hunt and Gordon Ion. St Andrews started to come back into the match after making a number of substitutes but couldn't find a way passed keeper Kyle Reid who kept his forth clean sheet in a row. With the clock ticking down Thistle got number 7 on 30 minutes when Gary Blair and Paul Williamson combined to set up Jordan Annan who controlled the ball beautifully to dummy the defence and fire passed the St Andrews keeper.

F/T 7-0

Ref's man of the match went to Jordan Annan but once again all 14 Gleniffer players put in a magnificent shift to fully deserve to go into the last 16 of the cup. Next up is a league match against St Andrews on Saturday 6th December at the Ibrox centre
